Bodhisattvas ~
A Bodhisattva is a being whose path is the attainment of enlightenment, not only for oneself, but for all living creatures. When a Bodhisattva reaches the seventh stage of spiritual development, one becomes transcendent or Mahasattva. Although the Bodhisattva has then achieved deliverance from the cycle of rebirth, compassion compels the Mahasattva to voluntarily stay in the existing world in order to pursue the redemption of all beings, destroying the burden of karma for others.

Medicine Buddha

"If one meditates on the Medicine Buddha, one will eventually attain enlightenment, but in the meantime one will experience an increase in healing powers both for oneself and others and a decrease in physical and mental illness and suffering." –Lama Tashi Namgyal

Medicine Buddha is worshipped as the dispenser of spiritual medicine that can cure spiritual, psychological, and physical disease. He has made 12 vows to help those who call upon him when ill or injured, and to aid those who revere him to achieve a long and healthy life. Through the practice of meditation on the Medicine Buddha, one can generate enormous healing power for self as well as helping others find their innate healing potential.

He holds in his lap a bowl of lapis lazuli in which is an arura or myrobalan plum. Lapis is Latin for stone and has been associated with healing at least since the time of Sumerian goddesses.

As Amitabha is the Buddha of the Pure Land of the Western Paradise, the Medicine Buddha is the Buddha of the Pure Land of the Eastern Paradise.
